Llandovery College Learning Support Department caters for students who have high (or above) ability with mild or moderate dyslexia, dyspraxia or similar problems. The College provides an ideal environment for such children because it is small and friendly, and therefore is able to give the individual care that such pupils often require. The academic, social and emotional needs of the students are well considered. Small classes and a focused approach result in increased confidence and improved skills, and our record of academic achievement for the students on our learning support register is very good.
The Learning Support Department is an integral part of the structure of the College, and does not operate in isolation. The key to its success is the close co-operation of all the staff and the sensitive and flexible teaching that ensues. The Department is fully prepared to offer support and advice to all subject teachers on methods of providing a differentiated curriculum. The main aim of the Department is the full integration of all students as appropriate. The successful integration of students depends on a whole school approach.
The Learning Support Department offers specialist teaching in literacy skills to small groups at the time when other students are attending French. Some students are taught numeracy as well, and cross-curricular support is put in place where it is necessary. One-to-one lessons are also available to those who require individual programmes that cannot be met in the group situation, but these are funded by the parents.
The staff are pleased to help parents with advice regarding students' difficulties, and to carry out assessments. We work closely with an Educational Psychologist. IEPS are written and maintained for every student, and annual reviews are carried out for those students who have LEA statements.
Most students with specific learning difficulties have concessions in both internal and public exams. The Head of Learning Support works in conjunction with the school's Examination Officer to ensure that appropriate arrangements are approved by the exam boards.
Staff in the Department support children in the Preparatory School, ensuring early intervention, and continuity for those who move up to the Senior School.
