Sixth Form

The Sixth Form is the exciting and challenge transition between the fixed structure of GCSEs and the independent life and learning of an undergraduate degree. The College has a responsibility to help young people to gain the very best from this two year period of transition through good teaching, a wide range of opportunities, the setting of high expectation and the creation of a relaxed but committed and energetic environment.  In their turn Sixth Form pupils are expected to work hard, engage in a range of the many opportunities on offer and take an active interest in their career plans. Sixth Form pupils are role models for younger children and also take on a number of interesting, challenging and rewarding responsibilities. We see Sixth Formers as the senior members of the school community who represent themselves, their families and their school in many different ways over the two years before higher education.

The emphasis in lessons and in general Sixth Form life is on individual learning and personal and social development. Pupils will need to be self motivated and resourceful in university and the Sixth Form is the place to learn and develop these vital skills. It is also somewhere where new, more adult responsibilities and experiences are available. In support of the development beyond school, the College provides a detailed and professional careers advisory service to all pupils. Pupils attend a wide range of universities and study a broad selection of courses after College and a great deal of attention is given to helping all pupils understand and then realise their personal ambitions.

The school offers a large number of diverse A level courses and guidance is given on selecting the most appropriate combination. There are regular opportunities for parents to meet with staff to discuss and monitor academic progress and each pupil is assigned a personal tutor.
Sixth form students have use of designated common room in the Sports Hall, overlooking Tredegar Close where they relax and unwind with Sky TV, pool table and toasties in the evening.
