The Combined Cadet Force is a youth organisation sponsored by the Ministry of Defence.
Membership of the CCF is compulsory in years 9 and 10. In their first year cadets are instructed in subjects such as: military knowledge, drill, turnout, map and compass, weapon training and field craft. The first year’s military training is completed with a summer camp in the first week of the summer holidays, after which pupils are awarded their recruits certificate. In the second year and in conjunction with the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme cadets can take part in more adventurous pursuits such as clay pigeon shooting, expedition training, canoeing, climbing, abseiling and hill-walking. The second year of training culminates in a 4-day adventurous training camp in the first week of the Easter holidays, after which the cadets qualify for their army proficiency certificate. After these two years a cadet may opt to stay in the CCF as a Non Commissioned Officer. (NCO).
