Chess Mega Finals
Three of our pupils took part in the Chess Mega Finals against chess clubs and schools from all over Wales. They qualified for the event and one of our chess stars, Moriah Thomas, has made it through to the Chess Giga Final in Manchester this summer. Congratulations to all three on doing so well!
LAMDA Speech and Drama
This is a relatively new initiative made available to all classes with the exception of pre-prep. The pupils choose a poem from a set list, learn it by heart and then recite it to an independent judge who will visit the school. They are required to perform the poem using no actions, the focus being on vocal expression. Also, children take in one item (a toy for example) which they will be asked to talk about at length.
Recently, the LAMDA examiner visited the school to assess all pupils who were undertaking their speech and drama examinations. He was mightily impressed with all our pupils, stating to teachers that he had never seen such well rounded children. Considering he travels all around the world as part of his job, this is a profound compliment.
All pupils obtained at least a merit with the large majority achieving a distinction. One year 4 pupil, Matthew Davies was told that his recitation was one of the best the examiner had ever heard!
We hope that those leaving the prep school are able to carry on with further examinations as it can actually count towards UCAS points when students are trying to enter universities.
This term some of the younger pupils have taken up the scheme and there is a wider range of branches to the programme available for other pupils.
Horse Riding
Horse riding started again this term with pupils going to an equestrian centre in Trap where they undergo tutoring in riding and basic stable management.
Ballet
Along with established schemes, the extra curricular sport provision is being constantly extended. Every Tuesday, a professional ballet teacher, Mrs Walker visits the school and takes two separate classes.
Music Lessons
A wide range of musical tuition is offered – singing, violin, cello, flute, oboe, piano and guitar. All pupils undertake examinations in each instrument through various independent examining boards.
Send a Friend to School project
Since October 2006, The Gollop Preparatory School has been actively involved with Action Aid’s “Send a Friend to School” project, undertaking various fundraising activities to assist in paying for the education of an impoverished child in India. The child is effectively being sponsored by our pupils. The child in question is Murugan Ramesh from Tamil Nadu, South East India. Not only did we see an opportunity to assist a child in an impoverished part of the world we saw this scheme as a chance to educate and enrich our own pupils. Being in such a privileged environment and a relatively isolated rural community our pupils do not have first hand awareness of any kind of poverty and are not regularly immersed in a diverse, multi-cultural society. Through this scheme and the curriculum links via various subject topics and our PSHE scheme (which runs through all aspects of the school and classroom teaching) we hope this scheme helps us nurture the whole child ethos which we propagate at the Gollop Prep School.
