Overseas Students

Set in the beautiful Welsh Valleys, Llandovery College welcomes students from abroad.  This deliberately small school is set in the heart of Llandovery and is a safe, friendly environment.  Dedicated staff enable pupils to maximize their full potential by supporting both their study programmes and ensuring they take part in the full range of Extra Curricular activities available to them.

Llandovery College recognise our students from abroad come with special needs and concerns.  For some it is the first time away from home, for others the first time in a new country.  Staff work closely with our students to identify any concerns and ensure they are settled and happy whilst in our care. As part of this recognition, Llandovery College will soon have a dedicated staff member for our Overseas Students.  The new “Overseas Liaison Officer” will act as a medium to support students, staff and parents in their sometimes difficult, but ultimately fulfilling years studying in the United Kingdom.

EFL
The department provides general support and direction for students in its care.  They learn English Language skills through both formal and informal means and these newfound skills assist them as they prepare for their GCSE and “A” level examinations.  It is critical to the success of the overseas student to provide this support as it assists them with social skills, integration, academic success and emotional support.  The department also works closely with those involved in the Pastoral Care of the students, namely their tutors and House Parents.

Classes are timetabled during Welsh, French and mainstream English lessons.  Years 9, 10, and 11 have 8-10 lessons per week with Years 12 and 13 having 4 lessons per week.

For further information regarding the English as a Foreign Language department please see our dedicated section on this website.  Follow the link under the “Academic” Section.

Boarding Facilities
Living away from home and in a different country can be difficult. We ensure that our residential staff are caring and considerate to the needs of our boarding pupils from overseas.
Set in the grounds of Llandovery College are five boarding houses. Tŷ Teilo for girls years 7 to 9, Tŷ Llanover for girls years 10 to 13, Tŷ Llandingat for boys years 7 to 9, Tŷ Cadog for boys years 10 and 11 and Tŷ Ddewi for boys years 12 and 13.
Students in years 12 and 13 also have the opportunity of boarding within the Junior Houses.  These students are often given special responsibilities and privileges and enjoy helping housestaff with the younger students. This houseshare arrangement brings great benefit to both senior and junior students alike and is a popular option amongst the senior student body.
All houses are unique, each with its own vibrancy, however an overlying theme of co-operation, tolerance and understanding is promoted throughout all houses and housestaff work hard to ensure that each child's  needs are met individually.  Boarders at Llandovery enjoy a high standard of accommodation, ready access to top class sporting facilities, a full extra curricular programme and maybe most importantly our students talk of friendships built and trusts gained which see them through their time at College and often to their lives beyond it.
Further details on each of the Boarding Houses can be found in this section of the website by clicking on the individual House Names.
