Jargon Buster

Llandovery College like most organisations has its own form of jargon which for new students and parents can at first seem quite baffling.  To help we have created the “Jargon Buster” below which we hope will go some way to making the College a little less mysterious!
Bursar
Chief administrative and financial officer. Responsible for the school’s finances, estate, facilities.
“Claggers”         The 6th form wing of the Teilo girls boarding house 
Cadog

Cadog, the Middle School boys boarding house

CCF Combined Cadet Force (Army and Air Force)
Ddewi Ddewi, the Senior Boys boarding house
D of E The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme
EFL (or ESL) English as a Foreign (or Second) language
Exeat A long weekend on which all boarders, other than overseas students, return home.  Overseas students can remain on campus and enjoy a weekend of special activities.
Feast Christmas Black Tie dinner held in December for each year group.
Gappies Students who have recently completed schooling and are spending a year travelling  (“Gap year”) prior to commencing University studies.  Usually from Australia, New Zealand or South Africa.
Gated Punishment for misdemeanour whereby student privileges are withdrawn and the students must stay within the school “gates”.
H o D Head of Department
Horizontal House House in which boarding students live.
Housemaster/Housemistress First port of call for parents or students of boarders who have any concerns regarding pastoral issues.
Houses Students will be placed in both a Vertical House and Horizontal House. See description of each for the difference.
Lent Term 2nd term of the school year.
Llandingat Llandingat, the Junior school boys boarding house.
Llanover Llanover, one of the two girls boarding houses.
Michaelmas Term 1st term of the school year
Playing Fields College golf course, hockey and rugby fields, a short walk from College
Prep Homework
Registrar Deals with any enquiries from potential new students and admissions
San Medical Centre or Sanatorium
SCR Common room for teachers and staff
Signing out book A book which boarders must sign if they leave campus (each boarding house has its own specific rules relating to the signing out book)
Summer Term Last term of the school year
Teilo Teilo, one of the two girls boarding houses
Tredegar Tredegar Close, the 1st XV rugby pitch.
Tutor The first port of call for all parents or students concerning academics and for day students, pastoral issues.
Vertical House House team for inter-house cultural, sporting and social activities
Warden The Headmaster or Principal

Year 8 Form 2
Year 9 Form 3
Year 10 Form 4
Year 11 Form 5
Year 12 Lower Sixth
Year 13 Upper Sixth
