New Developments
The ‘Christopher Bell Pavilion’ was officially opened on Saturday 14th October by Mr David Morgan, Chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board. Over 100 Old Llandoverians and guests enjoyed a glass of champagne down on the playing fields in brilliant sunshine before the afternoons’ festival of sport began culminating in the Llandovery College v Christ College 1st XV rugby match on Tredegar Close. The entertainment room inside the Pavilion is to be named after Carwyn James, former Welsh Master and Rugby Coach at the College. The Pavilion has the facility to change 4 teams at any one time and is the latest in a series of developments at the College.

Annual Dinner 2007

The biennial Cardiff dinner on the eve of the Wales v England match was held at Jurys Hotel on Friday 16th March. The toast to the school was proposed by Ian Gollop, Chairman of Trustees, and, in the unavoidable absence of the Warden, Peter Hogan, the response was given by Ferdia Earle, Head Girl and Robert Jones, Head Boy. The toast to the guests was proposed by Dr Nigel Waskett, and the chief speaker, Rev. Professor Thomas G Watkin, Head of Bangor Law School, responded.

Sevens Supper 2007

The traditional Sevens Supper was held at the Richmond Gate Hotel on Thursday 22nd March. The boys’ and girls’ squads and their coaches were the guests of the London Branch of the O.Ll. Society, and there were several O.Lls, parents and other friends present. Please note that the 2008 Sevens Supper will be held on Thursday 13th March in Richmond.

Annual Dinner 2008

The 2008 dinner will be held at the East India Club, St James’s Square, London on Friday 1st February. Contact the London Branch for more details.

Thomas Phillips Teaching Centre

The Old Llandoverian Society has now fulfilled its promise to contribute £10,000 towards the new Teaching Centre, a year ahead of schedule. The Society has sponsored one of the classrooms on the first floor.

Pre and Post match parties in Cardiff

The East Wales Branch has hosted these parties for many years, but recently attendance has been disappointing. The income from the sale of raffle tickets has barely covered half the cost of the room at the Big Sleep Hotel, and there is a real danger that this facility will have to be discontinued. It is up to Old Llandoverians and guests to support these parties, which are held at a convenient venue close to the ground. Perhaps an O.Ll. would like to sponsor the hire of the room for one game! Forthcoming important matches at Cardiff(2007-08): September 15, v Australia; February 9, v Scotland; February 23, v Italy; March 15, v France.

Rugby Internationals

Our two latest full internationals continue to impress. Alun Wyn Jones has now played ten times for Wales, including a most impressive debut in the Six Nations Tournament. Rachel Poolman has won 14 caps for the Welsh Women’s team, and is currently playing at outside-half.

Old Llandoverian Sport

The Old Llandoverians traditionally play the school at Tennis and Cricket on the Friday before Speech Day; next year the matches will be held on May 23rd. Please contact Steve Meyler at Steve.Meyler@dtir.gsi.gov.uk (tennis) or Russell Hughes-Pickering on 01970 611666, or russellhp@yahoo.com (cricket) if you are interested in playing.

The Old Llandoverian Golf Society started the 2007 season with the traditional competition for O.Lls and guests at Southerndown last April. O.Ll. golfers meet several times during the summer: further details from Major T.Gwyn Davies on 01656 880457.

For over half a century the 1st XV used to play the O.Lls, known as the Graham Jones XV. Recent WRU legislation means that matches between boys and adults can no longer be played.
