Llandovery College v Millfield
Saturday 26th
January
In a thrilling encounter on Saturday, Llandovery College
drew with the ‘old enemy’ Millfield 12 points apiece.
In the first half, dominated by The College, Millfield took
an early lead when after some good work by their backs, they scored an
unconverted try. Llandovery came back
strongly and were camped on the Millfield line, held out by some excellent
Millfield defense. However, when they
cleared their line with a kick to touch, Sam Rowlands took a quick throw in to
Tom Jones who beat three players and then moved the ball to speedy wing Richard
Read who scored in the corner. College
should have gone further ahead just before half-time when outside half Gruf
Jones was caught just short of the line, with two of his own players outside
him waiting for the ball.
With the wind behind them in the second half, Llandovery
soon found themselves pinned in their own 22 when Tom Jones had his kick
charged down. From the ensuing lineout
the ball went to the Millfield centre who broke through three tackles to score
a converted try under the posts. College
then came back with some good driving play by their forwards and from a ruck on
the half way line the ball was moved wide to Jon Botes and as he side stepped
the full back, he was felled by a short arm tackle which the referee deemed
dangerous and a penalty try was awarded.
In the end, a draw was a fair result and the game was an
excellent advertisement for schools rugby.

College v Plymouth College January 2008
In a keenly contested game on Tredegar on Saturday 12th
January, the College defeated a spirited Plymouth College
by 27pts to 5pts.
Llandovery missed a couple of early opportunities to score
but poor handling let them down. They
paid the price for those early lapses when Plymouth went ahead through a good drive by
their forwards from a lineout. However,
College came back with a good try of their own, when Centre Nicky Williams cut
through the visitors defense. He was
stopped close to the line and from the resulting scrum No. 8 Jordan Williams
picked up and fed flanker Jason Ronowitz who scored under the posts. Neil Davies converted.
The second half was all Llandovery and despite the heavy conditions
they scored three excellent tries.
Immediately from the restart, Plymouth
infringed at a ruck and Neil Davies kicked the penalty. Then, the two second half replacements, James
Davies and Captain Tom James were instrumental in putting No.8 Jon Botes over
in the corner. Tom James, despite carrying
a slight injury, was now carving open the Plymouth
defense and he created the opening for a Nicky Williams break, who then passed
to Gruf Jones to score a try that Neil Davies again converted. Only good Plymouth defense stopped the College from
scoring on numerous other occasions until, from a well worked move from a
lineout Hugh Thomas created the space for the ball to move out to wing Thomas
Thomas who outpaced the covering defense to score wide out.
Final Score:- Llandovery
College 27pts – Plymouth College
5pts
Llandovery College 15pts Sedbergh v Llandovery 3pts
In a close encounter in Sedbergh on Saturday, the College
went down by 15pts to 3pts against a very strong Sedbergh XV.
Sedbergh went ahead with a well-worked try by their right
wing. However, Llandovery clawed their
way back into the game and Neil Davies kicked a penalty for a Sedbergh
infringement at a ruck. Sedbergh then
retaliated with a penalty of their own making the half-time score 10pts to
3pts.
The second half was all Llandovery and they nearly drew
level when a good chip by scrum half Tom James went over the Sedbergh line and
wing Tom Driver beat the defence to touch down.
However the referee failed to see the grounding of the ball and
disallowed the try. Llandovery continued
to pressure the Sedbergh line and only good defence kept them out. Sedbergh eventually worked the ball out of
defence and with the final play of the game, scored a try wide out.

LLANDOVERY COLLEGE 7pts KIRKHAM G. S. 19pts
In a fast and furious game on Tredegar on Saturday, the College went down to a well-organised Kirkham XV by 19pts to 7pts. The game started well for Llandovery and only some good cover – defence prevented them from scoring when wing Tom Driver was tackled just short of the Kirkham line.
Llandovery continued to press and were gaining control when flanker George Humfrey was controversially sin-binned. During his absence from the field, Kirkham scored two converted tries.
The first was from a penalty, which came back off the post and into the Kirkhams centers hands for him to score under the posts. The second was from a scrum when the No.8 broke blind, and with no flanker to oppose him he created a 2 v 1 for another score.
Restored to 15 players in the second half the College began to get on top again. Good handling by the three-quarter nearly saw them score and then No. 8 James Thomas crossed the line, only to drop the ball when grounding. However with all this pressure on the Kirkham line it was only a matter of time before The College scored and the try came when George Humfrey broke the defense to score a converted try. Llandovery were now looking for the equalizing try and it should have come when wing Tom Driver tried to take an inside pass which would have sent him clear. However, he dropped the pass and the Kirkham full back picked up the ball and sprinted 60 yards unopposed to score.
Llandovery College 24pts v Christ College 5pts
In a fast and flowing game on Saturday, Llandovery College defeated the 'old enemy' by 24pts to 5pts. The first half was a very close affair with only a Cwyllog Anwyl Williams try separating the teams.
The second half began with Christ College camped on the Llandovery line, but unable to breach the visitors defence. Having withstood the pressure, Llandovery began to move the ball wide, resulting in tries for full back Nicky Williams and Griff Jones. Jordan Williams added another with outside half Neil Davies converting two.
Llandovery College 21pts v Hartpury College 22pts
In a closely fought game on Saturday Llandovery College went down by 22 points to 21 points to a strong Hartpury College XV. The first 25 minutes was a hard dour affair with neither side dominating. It was Hartpury who went ahead when College were penalised for handling in a ruck and they converted the penalty. They went further ahead when a missed tackle by the Llandovery backs let in the Hartpury outside half to score an unconverted try.
Half time: Llandovery College 0 pts, Hartpury College 8 pts.
However, within two minutes of the restart, College were awarded a penalty for offside and Tom Driver took a quick tap to score a try which Neil Davies converted. Llandovery then when further ahead when a chip ahead by Neil Davies was deliberately thrown into touch by Hartpury and a penalty try was awarded.
Llandovery were then reduced to 14 men when Captain James Thomas was yellow-carded for a high tackle. Hartpury took advantage, and from a driving lineout they scored a Converted Try. Then with 4 minutes to go, and under pressure on their own 22 meter line, College moved the ball quickly to wing Tom Driver who beat two men to score an excellent try, which Neil Davies again converted.
With the game won, and James Thomas back on the park, Llandovery suffered a cruel blow. Neil Davies, who had played superbly throughout, had a kick charged down by the Hartpury number 8, who followed up to score under the posts.
Final Score: Llandovery College 21pts, Hartpury College 22pts.
