The Combined Cadet Force is a youth organisation sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. It is designed, not to prepare for a military career as many might assume, but to develop a wide range of important life skills:
  • self reliance
  • endurance
  • community service
  • physical fitness
  • leadership
  • team work
  • personal responsibility.

Most potential employers and universities hold CCF experience in high regard. For the participants, it is a challenging and fun programme that can bring real adventure, with opportunities for flying, clay pigeon shooting, expedition training, canoeing, climbing, abseiling and hill-walking.

Membership of the CCF is compulsory in years 9 and 10. In their first year cadets are instructed in subjects such as: military knowledge, drill, turnout, map and compass, weapon training and field craft. The first year’s military training is completed with a summer camp in the first week of the summer holidays, after which pupils are awarded their recruits certificate. In the second year and in conjunction with the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme, cadets get to stretch their wings by taking part in a wide variety of adventure activities. The second year of training culminates in a 4-day adventurous training camp in the first week of the Easter holidays, after which the cadets qualify for their army proficiency certificate.

After these two years, many pupils choose to stay in the CCF as a Non Commissioned Officer. (NCO) taking on roles of greater responsibility and developing even more skills.

Llandovery College CCF has an enviable reputation in many competitions, including climbing and shooting. We also offer a CCF Scholarship for the Sixth Form - worth 100% of fees - for a cadet from Treorchy Comprehensive School. Click here for details.
