| Llandovery College - the place for you? Welcome to the world of Llandovery - it's interesting, it’s busy, it’s never boring - and every member of staff begins and ends each term running. If you enjoy the charged atmosphere of a dynamic boarding school, where everyone lends a hand, then this is the place for you. You can make your mark in the classroom, the parade ground, the expedition trails, on the sports field, in drama productions or in musical concerts. Whatever your specialism, talent or hobby, you can enthuse others in the special environment of Llandovery. It is a place that truly embraces the idea of the schoolmaster or mistress. What it's really like ... Llandovery is situated in a privileged position. It offers good facilities, committed staff and confident, happy students. Across the school there are 122 employees and some 320 pupils. As somewhere for you, it will be exactly what you make it. Although it has its share of talented pupils (and staff), the real beauty of the place is its diversity. It breeds confidence and self -belief whilst hopefully also allowing for a little humility along the way. Perks of the job The perks of a job are rarely discussed at interview, yet they can often make the difference between accepting and rejecting an offer. Small class sizes plus excellent resources allow staff to focus on the job at hand which is the maximizing of each child’s potential. At Llandovery College, fee reductions for the children of staff are 66%. The school also has a limited amount of accommodation that staff may wish to live in. School holidays are significantly longer than maintained schools and are in line with the independent sector, and they reflect the commitment that staff make during the term. Staff are also able to make full use of all the facilities that are on offer. Making the right move Relocating to the area brings many rewards. Here in Wales, we have a different pace of life from many cities whilst still being connected to the twenty-first century! The beautiful countryside is all around you and the villages of Llandeilo, Rhandirmwyn & Myddfai are some of the most attractive in the country. Lock, stock ... and barrel Nationally, the housing market is struggling, yet there will always be a high demand for many of our surrounding locations. However, prices still remain significantly lower than the rest of the UK and comparable to many other areas of the country. Please click here for a list of local estate agents. The surrounding towns have seen significant growth since the 1990s and this reflects its geographic position and proximity to Cardiff and Swansea. Life outside Term time is pretty frantic at Llandovery and some staff like to disappear in the holidays to reacquaint themselves with life beyond the Carmarthenshire countryside. If you do decide to live in the area, Carmarthenshire certainly cannot be accused of being bland and two-dimensional. Many of the villages dotted around boast excellent pubs and restaurants, and there are many places of interest nearby to visit. The National Botanic Gardens is nearby, and the home of The Royal Welsh Agricultural Show, Builth Wells, is 40 minutes away. It is less than an hour to the glorious Pembrokeshire coast; South Wales boasts some of the best surfing beaches in the UK. The slightly more diverse attractions of the annual Man versus Horse race, and International Bog Snorkeling competition can be found just up the road in Llanwrtyd Wells! For those less adventurous the local area is very popular for walking, mountain biking and riding. The Wales Rally GB makes full use of the surrounding forestry and passes through Llandovery on its way to the finishing line in Cardiff. The County town of Carmarthen, and the bustling market town of Brecon – home of the internationally-acclaimed annual Brecon Jazz festival, a diverse arts scene and the wonderful Theatr Brycheiniog - offer all the usual urban activities for medium size towns including cinemas, shopping, restaurants, theatres and ten-pin bowling. The Guardian Hay Literary Festival in one of the UK's most wonderful book towns is another annual arts event not to be missed, and less than an hour away. Of course Wales has a rich musical and sporting history and culture, and those who love their rugby or concerts are within an hour of the Millennium Stadium. Larger out-of-town shopping complexes can be found at Merthyr, Fforestfach and Trostre. Wales’ vibrant capital city Cardiff, with its brand new flagship shopping centre, and neighbouring Swansea are both just over an hour away by car.
The urban experience Although located on the fringes of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Llandovery College has easy access to the cities of Cardiff, Swansea and even London (90 minutes by train from Newport). Take the high-speed ferry from the west coast town of Fishguard, and you can be in Ireland in 3 hours door to door. Coming in cold? Coming from the Maintained Sector and dubious about private education? You are not alone in having doubts about supporting and involving yourself in independent education. At Llandovery though, staff and students come from a broad range of social and academic backgrounds. Many pupils receive some level of concession - whether bursary or scholarship, and the common room is a true mix of academic backgrounds. New to the job? Whether you are an NQT, a recently qualified graduate or an experienced teacher, Llandovery College has an excellent programme on offer and will support you well in your first year. We offer the fully accredited ISC newly qualified staff programme to NQTs and a new staff support programme to all staff, irrespective of experience. All staff will also be assigned both a subject and informal mentor. Need more information?
