International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
Llandovery College has a full-time specialist teacher, in addition to the Head of Department, who gives English language support to all our overseas students. The service provided depends upon the student's individual learning needs, and is centred around developing the very best spoken and written English. The Head of Department works closely with subject teachers to ensure that the specialist vocabulary needed for forthcoming lessons is taught at an appropriate time.
Most of our students go on to study at universities in the UK and the ESL syllabus is based on the requirements of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), the most widely-accepted qualification for entry into universities in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
In Years 7-11 international students are normally excused from Welsh and/or French and English lessons to receive English language support in small groups or as individuals. In the Sixth Form, students continue to receive language support during a proportion of their private study time. English language teaching is individually tailored so that, for example, students who are able to undertake either GCSE and/or A Level English can do so while continuing to receive specialist support. The College organises students’ attendance at the final IELTS examination which must be taken at an external testing centre. All international students also receive general support from our International Student Welfare Officer - click here for details.
