There is an established Old Boys and Girls network providing access to many former pupils who have forged successful careers in a wide range of industries.

As Head of Sixth Form, I ensure every student is provided with an inclusive, safe, engaging, and exciting environment that develops them both academically and socially. I am passionate about developing young people to achieve their full potential and ensuring they have the necessary skills to pursue all their future aspirations.

I moved to Llandovery College in Year 12 and, as someone who came from a state school in Swansea, there were many Sixth Forms and Colleges closer to home that I could have chosen but, for me, Llandovery College was by far the best option and my decision to come here was one of the best I have ever made.

One of the main reasons I chose to come to Llandovery College was the excellent teaching and this is due to the small class sizes. I studied Physics, Chemistry and Maths at A Level and the class sizes for these subjects were two, four and six respectively. If you are someone who likes to hide at the back of the class then this may initially put you off, but the academic benefits were truly invaluable. It allowed for a greater amount of the teacher's time to be spent on me individually, and I am fully aware that this was one of the greatest factors contributing to the results that I achieved.

In the Summer holidays after Year 12, I had the fantastic opportunity to go on exchange to Australia with six others from my year group. We stayed with our host families for six weeks and all had an amazing time doing things such as; climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, seeing the Blue Mountains and representing the College at Central Coast Grammar School. At Llandovery College, there are also exchanges to South Africa and New Zealand and I believe that this is one of the many things that set us apart from other Colleges.

Another of my favourite things about Llandovery College was the boarding community and the facilities available on campus. Before I started boarding I had already heard excellent things about the boarding community and now, as someone who stayed in Tŷ Cadog five nights every week, I can safely say that my expectations were exceeded! At the College there is a sense of being a big family unlike anywhere else I have ever been, and it is amazing how well everyone gets along whether it is boarders with non-boarders, members of the Senior School with members of the Prep School or anything in between. Moreover, almost all of the facilities stay open after school hours for the boarders to use and this includes the Sports Hall, Gym, Music Block, Computer Rooms and the Library. This ensures that we always have something to do as boarders and gives important opportunities to complete any school work with help from teachers that are on boarding duty.

I found Llandovery College to be a welcoming community that allows its students to thrive in academia, sport and the arts and I am extremely glad that I chose to come here for Sixth Form.

JOSIE

Former Head Girl

My time at Llandovery College has undoubtedly been filled with opportunity, growth and fun. Moving from Swansea to a boarding school in the Welsh countryside was a major change for me, but thanks to the nurturing environment of the College my independence, personality and confidence has increased beyond belief.

I have always been passionate about music and studying at Llandovery College has allowed me to become involved in many rewarding aspects of the Music Department. Being a member of both the Chapel Choir and College Choir has given me the opportunity to sing in various styles; from pop to classical and in languages from Zulu to Latin. In my last year at the College, I was able to co-lead the Chapel Choir as Head Chorister; something that has definitely developed my leadership abilities and confidence. I have very fond memories of being a part of Sixth Sense, performing on Speech Day and in the College’s Remembrance Day services and also taking part in school productions such as Les Misérables and Return to the Forbidden Planet.

Sport, a fundamental aspect of Llandovery College, has also been a big part of my experience. I never previously considered myself a hockey or rugby player but I can now say that I love both sports, even though I am arguably not the best at either. What inspired my fondness is the atmosphere and energy that sport brings to the school; how every pupil and teacher will come together to support a rugby match on Tredegar pitch or the annual hockey match against Christ College. Furthermore, I have really enjoyed being captain of the 1st VII Netball Team, revelling in the enthusiasm to play and train as a team where we always give our all to every game.

Boarding in Tŷ Llanofer was a fantastic experience where we often all came together to participate in Inter-house Competitions, ranging from the Academic Challenge to the Eisteddfod. When I first arrived in College I shared a room with a German student who only intended on staying for five months, but we became best friends and I convinced her to stay for the full academic year. I have made some of my closest friendships by boarding and, in the future, I hope we can look back and retell stories of the memories we made together.

Attending Llandovery College has given me many unique opportunities. One of the biggest benefits is the small class sizes, this allows teachers to establish a close working relationship with their pupils and get the very best out of them. The Science Department arranged regular visits to Swansea University where we undertook science experiments and even inter-school competitions. This allowed me to apply my skills in a variety of different environments. The most significant opportunity that I took advantage of outside of my A Level studies, was the school exchange programme to Australia. We were welcomed into the hearts and homes of our exchange families and also attended school there. We experienced different ways of living, schooling and culture, and some of the highlights of my seven week exchange were surfing in Byron Bay and climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

I can safely say, thanks to the unwavering support from both academic and pastoral staff, I now feel prepared for the challenges of life having grown into my independence within a caring, encouraging and supportive environment.

Having been a student at Llandovery College for the past seven years, the College has undoubtedly had an enormous impact on my life. My time at Llandovery College has been full of opportunity and new experiences, from which I have gained so many fond memories and important skills that I am sure will stand me in good stead for my future. Not only have many of these experiences been enjoyable and beneficial to my future, but also instrumental in the development of my character as the College allows pupils to develop in so much more than just their academic ability.

The depth and range of the College’s sports programme has allowed me to continue training and competing in sports I already took part in prior to joining, as well as giving me the opportunity to take up new sports such as Rugby and Shooting. Had I not joined the College I am sure I would never have had the opportunity to be involved in so many sports, nor would I have been able to compete at National and International level. With the College’s Sports Department, I have been able to take part in numerous competitions, tournaments and tours over the years. Most notable of this list of events has to be our Sports Tour to Vancouver, Canada and tournaments such as Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s.

The College has an extensive co-curricular programme which has enabled me to participate in sports and activities such as Shooting and the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). This has allowed me to travel all over the UK and abroad to take part in sport and adventurous training in locations such as Snowdonia, Bristol, London and Bavaria, Germany. Since joining the College’s CCF - and thanks to all the hard-working staff that help run it - I have had the opportunity to take part in a huge variety of training and competitions, all of which I have thoroughly enjoyed. All of these experiences, some of which are arduous and ‘character building’, have helped shape me as a person and have allowed me to develop invaluable skills that are sure to benefit me in my future career, whether it be within the armed forces or in a civilian job.

Due to the College being such a close-knit community of staff and pupils, and the fact that I have boarded there for so many years, it has enabled me to have a much more personal relationship with both pastoral and academic staff. Thanks to the diligence and genuine care for the success and well-being of students, it has also meant I have been able to reach my full potential both inside and outside the classroom.

Boarding has been the most transformative and enjoyable part of my time at the College. Although I have had to spend periods of time away from home, the experience of boarding has resulted in me gaining immeasurable development in many life skills including my independence. Unsurprisingly, it has also left me with seven years’ worth of incredible memories. Having been lucky enough to visit Australia last summer as part of the College’s Exchange Programme, it became apparent that the life skills I have gained through boarding have benefitted me immensely.

In addition to all the great experiences I have accumulated over the years, many of which are exclusive to schools as unique and rewarding as the College, I have made friendships which I am sure I shall have forever. Despite having finished now at the College, I know my time here will continue to benefit me for the rest of my life.
