New Director of Elite Rugby at Llandovery College

Llandovery College is excited to announce the appointment of Sam Williams as their new Director of Elite Rugby. Llandovery College has an outstanding reputation for producing top-class international rugby players and provides an exceptional Elite Rugby Programme where students receive extensive rugby coaching, skills and guidance, developing the stars of the future.

Ex-Ospreys professional rugby player and Level 4 Coach, Sam has worked in many high performance environments. His involvement with the Regional Pathway and Female Academies, along with his exceptional contacts, will strengthen the School’s existing close working relationships with Regional Partners the Scarlets, Ospreys and Dragons. Sam’s appointment as Director of Elite Rugby promises an exciting future for both our male and female rugby players.

Sam has eight years coaching experience and is an enthusiastic, innovative individual with vast knowledge specialising in sports coaching, athlete development, mentoring and education. On his new appointment Sam said: “I am very happy to be given the opportunity to be part of such a strong rugby institution such as Llandovery College. The College has a proven record of developing young talented athletes who are able to really excel in the classroom while still pursuing their sporting aspirations. With such a rich history in rugby and now the new Regional Partnerships that they have developed, it is an exciting time to be joining Llandovery College and I am looking forward to seeing how far we can evolve the already impressive rugby provision in place.”

This appointment will continue Llandovery College’s well-established and exceptional school environment where developing athletes alongside their academic success is the primary goal. The Elite Rugby Programme develops players through challenging, nurturing and empowering them to be the best they can be. Sam will be working with highly talented and engaged students who take pride in their achievements both on the field and in the classroom, leading their progression into Academies, Senior Squads and ultimately, international honours.

The Llandovery College Warden, Dominic Findlay, said: “I am hugely excited regarding the appointment of Sam. He was a standout candidate during the interview process and will bring many qualities to both our boys and girls rugby programme.” The current Director of Elite Rugby, Ioan Cunningham, leaves to start his full time role with the Welsh Rugby Union. During his time at Llandovery College, Ioan developed the outstanding Elite Rugby Programme and the appointment of Sam Williams will continue to ensure that the rugby provision at Llandovery College remains the best in the Country.
