Shwmae Su’mae

Llandovery College pupils recently celebrated the ‘Shwmae Su’mae’ (Hello, how are you) Day. October 15 is the national day to celebrate the Welsh language across the world and has as its motto: ‘Mae’r Gymraeg yn perthyn i bawb / The Welsh language belongs to everyone.’ This annual campaign promotes the idea of starting every conversation with shwmae, su’mae or shwdi.

Pupils took advantage of the opportunity to have fun and share the Welsh language across the College and the community of Llandovery. Highlights of the action packed day included:

  • Lighting up the front of Llandovery College with the Shwmae Su’mae logo
  • Putting literature in local shops and cafes providing the Welsh words for everyday items
  • A quiz in the Prep School to identify the Welsh words used in and around the school
  • Traditional lamb cawl for lunch
  • Making Welsh cakes
  • Selfie frames created to promote the ‘Shwmae Su’mae’ message across social media
  • Coleg Llanymddyfri listed on the S4C weather map
