We couldn’t have chosen a better production to mark Llandovery College’s return to the stage than “The Wizard of Oz”. The appreciative audience were thrilled with students’ performances and sang along to well known songs such as “Over the Rainbow” and “Follow the Yellow Brick Road”. The high standard of showmanship was commented on by many and we must give thanks to two very special cast members; Hercules Cliffe and Roxie Howell-Cousins who each played Toto!
We are so proud that those students “behind the scenes” boast just as much in the way of excellence.
Every piece of scenery, props and costume was crafted by our talented staff and students. The costumes were made by Miss Beynon with help from students in Year 9 studying for the Arts Award qualification. They certainly rivalled any costume you would see in a professional production.
The set was designed by Mr Rodgers, and he led a huge team of students in creating, sanding, painting, and perfecting a truly remarkable vision of Kansas, Munchkinland and Oz.
Technical theatre is often overlooked, and we were fortunate to have a student-led stage crew with programming of lighting and sound also carried out by students under the tutorship of Mr Field.
Orchestral scores in musicals are notoriously challenging; and our senior school musicians rose completely to this challenge, playing alongside professionals and gaining valuable skills.
The production was a huge team effort, and it was a delight to bring a touch of magic back into ours and others lives after such a testing few years. Focus will now turn to the Prep School production of Annie which takes place in the latter half of the Trinity term – we are sure it will be equally fabulous!
