After weeks of preparation, and after all the rituals and traditions associated with this historic fixture had been observed, Brecon Day 2026 finally arrived.
Bathed in autumn sunshine, the College looked magnificent as it prepared to welcome our old rivals, Christ College Brecon, alongside supporters who had travelled from far and wide. The warmth of the October morning provided the perfect backdrop for one of the most eagerly anticipated days in the College calendar.
The day began in the Great Hall with the traditional Brecon Day Breakfast, bringing together pupils, staff, parents, Old Llandoverians, and friends of the College. It provided a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old friends, share memories, and celebrate the unique sense of community that surrounds Brecon Day.
This year's breakfast was made particularly special by the presentation of the 1966 Brecon Day match ball to the current 1st XV by members of the 1966 side. Sharing stories of their school days and recollections of the 1966 match, they provided a powerful link between past and present, reminding all present of the rich history and enduring traditions of the fixture.
The sporting festivities commenced at 12.30pm with the 1st XI Hockey Match. Our girls were welcomed onto the pitch in true Brecon Day style, passing through a guard of honour formed by members of the 1st XV proudly dressed in their College blazers and famous red socks. In a touching show of support for breast cancer awareness, the match was played using a pink hockey ball.
With supporters from both schools lining the touchlines, the atmosphere was superb. Despite a determined and spirited performance, our girls were unable to overcome a strong Christ College side, with the visitors securing a 7-0 victory. Regardless of the result, the team represented the College with great pride and determination.
Following a brief respite and the traditional bacon baps in the Great Hall, attention turned to Tredegar Close for the main event of the day.
As kick-off approached, the sense of anticipation was palpable. The touchlines were packed with supporters, Old Llandoverians, parents, pupils, and friends of both schools. The beat of drums echoed around the ground, chants rang out from the sidelines. The atmosphere was electric, creating a fitting stage for one of Welsh schools' sport's most historic fixtures.
The players emerged to a chorus of cheers and applause before taking to the field for the 129th Brecon Day Match. What followed was a superb contest between two schools whose rivalry stretches back well over a century. Playing with pride, passion, and determination, Llandovery College produced an outstanding performance to secure a memorable 41-10 victory over Christ College Brecon.
It was wonderful to welcome so many families, members of the local community, and generations of Old Llandoverians back to the College for this truly special occasion.
